Instructions for Changing your Screen Resolution
|
One of the most maddening things that can happen as you surf the
Internet is to discover a website that interests you, only to find out that
you can only view one half of the page without scrolling to the right and
left. Fear not, however, because in most cases, the situation can be
easily rectified on your own computer. You need to change your screen
resolution to be able to view the entire width of any web page in which
you are interested. Let's take it one step at a time...
Make sure that you have a blank screen before you... minimize or close
any open windows and then right click your mouse anywhere on your
wallpaper. You should immediately see a menu that looks like the

one I've captured here, labeled "1st Menu." this one is from Windows XP, but Windows 98 works in
exactly the same way and all of the menus are set up alike. So, these instructions will work with either
operating system.
Step #2.
The last item at the bottom of this menu (see my big arrow)
says "Properties," and we want to left click on that, which
should bring up the Windows "Display Properties" Box,
shown here to the right. You'll notice several tabs at the top,
which are pretty much self-explanatory. The mysterious one
located clear to the right is the one we want: "Settings." I've
indicated its position with another dark arrow. Go ahead and
place your cursor on the Settings tab with your mouse and
click away. Should the Force be with you, the "Display
Properties" Dialog will take on a new look as it shows you
several options regarding the screen of your monitor. For
our purposes, there is only one item of interest: the Screen
Resolution slider bar which I've circled in the graphic below.
That's our target.

better. At the higher of those two settings you'd probably be able to see all of the pages of this website as I
intended them to be seen. At the lower setting, you should be able to see almost the total width of the
screen without having to scroll right or left and that was our goal. So if you want to see what the screen
will look like without actually changing it, click on the "Apply" button in the lower right corner of the
dialog box. If you don't want to see it first, just click on "OK" and you're done. Depending on your
operating system, if you select "Apply," another box might pop up asking you if you want to change and
you can click on "yes" to make the change. It can be changed at any time by following these same steps.
