| Scimitars Outgunned |
When I carved "Scimitar" I was trying to capture the life
and death dance of fair, practiced hand-to-hand combat,
when even the leaders were found on the field with their
men. "Scimitars Outgunned," however, shows the
beginning of the end of that parity, that feeling of pride
one gets from years and years of intense concentration,
hard practice and the acquisition of life-saving skills. The
end of the rifle barrel poking out between the swords
marks the end of parity in the struggle, the end of
hand-to-hand skills and pride. It ushers in an inevitable
era where their chess game, their fate, is being played far
from the field of battle.
