"Songbird" was my first attempt to
actually design something that would
require piercing an ostrich eggshell. What
started out as a songbird, though, ended up
looking more like a kingfisher to me.
Either way, the name stuck and the piece
gave me the opportunity to see how
difficult it was to get all the way though
such a thick shell and how difficult it was
to smooth the cuts afterwards to meet my
high standards. Although I have no photos
of this egg sitting on a lighted base, when
thus placed, it really comes alive and
projects quite an image on a wall.
