Patterns and Kits for Carved Eggs
|
I used to think that my biggest contribution...
...to egg carving would be my publication, The Eggshell Sculptor
and its ability to save people so much time and effort that they
would have normally spent learning by trial and error without it,
like I did. However, I'm no longer convinced that my legacy, if I
leave any at all, will be linked to those things, or even be linked to
my eggs themselves, at least not totally, even though an artist's
legacy would be what I would prefer to leave in my
wake. Unfortunately, I think I'll be remembered for developing a way for people with absolutely no
artistic talent to actually learn to carve eggs easily, deriving a great deal of satisfaction from it... a
simple, inexpensive method of getting the patten of their choice onto the eggshell in the first place. I'll
tell you how you can get those instructions here in a minute. Once beginning egg carvers could easily
get patterns onto their eggs, the need for more and more proven patterns started to skyrocket.
Thus, in 2003, Judy Nelson (one of the best artists and egg carvers I've ever known) and I teamed up to
produce patterns that would meet this new need. We both worked on every one of these patterns and
both carved them into eggshells until we were satisfied that even beginners could experience success.
We were rather surprised when experienced carvers began buying them as well. The patterns were
originally designed to be stencil-like, but would all hold together when the eggshell was cut away by
beginning carvers. Experienced egg carvers began using them also on emu eggs, taking advantage of
the shells' different layers of colors and not piercing the shell at all. Still others transformed these
patterns into ones they could carve in relief. So far we've produced two packs which can be bought
separately or together. The idea is for you to keep the originals and either make photocopies for actual
use, or to scan them into your computer and print them out to be transferred to your eggshells. Check
out the details for each below: (Overseas orders will be invoiced for actual shipping costs.)
To the left, there is a photo you can click on to enlarge, that
shows all of the patterns carved into goose eggs or smaller. These
eggs can be enhanced by carving additional decoration all around
the egg. I put grass and clouds all the way around my elephant
egg, for example. You can put these eggs on stands or glue
"up-eyes" on top so you can hang them. When done, they make
great gifts for almost any occasion and are especially nice for
shows where you need some less expensive items to sell, because
these patterns do not take long to carve, so you can sell for less
yet still make a profit.
Judy has sent me all of the materials required for me to produce a third pattern pack,
especially for emu eggs. I know many of you have been waiting for that one so keep checking
back here and it will be posted as soon as it is ready. There are some fantastic patterns that
will really blow you away. ~GL

This egg design is the result of my
numerous attempts to be juried into a
local gallery and being told each time
that I had no chance because what I do
is not art. So, I decided to do the Mona
Lisa and at least have some fun with it.
I took it to the gallery and presented it
to the owner saying, "Well, is this
art?" She turned her back and fled. My
work has yet to be seen before the jury
there, but I still take pieces in on
occasion to have a little more fun.

Ah, SeaBreeze... Another soccer practice
and I was thinking about the beaches in
New Zealand, where I spent part of my
childhood. I did some sketches, but
realized that a pattern wasn't possible, so
I wrote out directions that clearly explain
how to go about drawing it. Many, many
carvers have done this egg and sent pics. I
always display mine on a battery-powered
turntable as it's mesmerizing to see waves
both in front and back moving in sync.

I was sitting at one of my son's
soccer practices one afternoon
several years ago, with
sketchpad in hand, and I
decided to attempt to design a
perfectly balanced pattern.
Well, nothing is perfect, but this
simple carving has always
intrigued me and I have sold a
great many of them, so others
must see something in it too...
something calming, perhaps.
Nature at her most serene and
flowing. Who knows? But I still
love carving it and I hope you
will too!

Pattern Pack 2 is comprised of 15 images, some of which might be a bit more
challenging. There are three angels rendered in three quite different styles. One,
holding a wreath, is realistic. The second, wings outspread, is stylized. The third has
rays extending from her halo. There's a Christmas wreath, two different butterflies
in flight, two dolphins playing, an elephant, a hummingbird feeding from a flower,
two images that could be snowflakes or could be combined, as lace, with the three
different images of a wedding couple dancing, and even Rudolph the Reindeer.
